The Hand Knows a Room Before the Eyes Do

Eyes know a room in a single glance.

Hands know a room only after living in it.

A closet is the most private threshold in a home. You take off yesterday and put on today inside it. Reclaimed oak gives the space its volume, while brass hardware marks every point where force is applied — the long pull on glass doors, the round knob on wooden drawers.

Their positions need not be memorized.

The body finds them on its own.

When you pull a door open, the pull takes your leaning weight. When you hook a knob, your fingers meet just the right heft. These tiny bodily experiences add up to your entire judgment of whether "this room works."

Good cabinetry is not seen into being. It is used into being.
